Measuring Your Finger

Comfort is the goal.  You may want to wear the ring more or less permanently, in different seasons, in different weather, and so on.  The ring should be snug enough so it won’t slip off as you swing your hand, but loose enough that it won’t get stuck on your knuckle when you want to take it off.

Cold Temperatures

If you are new to wearing rings (men about to get married, pay attention here!), there are going to be some extremes when even a great fitting ring will become at risk of falling off.  The number of guys who loose their wedding ring on their honeymoon is astronomical!  This usually happens at the beach because your hand shrinks a bit in the water, in addition to the water helping the ring slide off.  If you’re heading to the ocean, lake, or pool, you may want to take the ring off first so you don’t lose it.  Or just switch fingers so it’s tight while you’re in the water.

Hot Temperatures

The same thing goes for the opposite extreme: heat.  Your hand will swell in hot weather, and the ring will become tight; perhaps too tight to take off.  This is also normal.  Just use soap and water and the ring will come off.  It should never be so tight that it cuts off circulation though.

1. Measure your ring size in the morning, when your fingers are a bit smaller, and at the end of the day when your fingers are a bit bigger.
2. Measure your finger when your hand is cold and when your hand is warm.
3. Measuring 3 to 4 times is best so you can get the best average and avoid isolated extremes.
